Tree Pruning
Maintaining Your Valuable Trees
Tree Pruning
Well maintained trees increase property value, provide energy-saving shade and windbreak, prevent soil erosion, provide habitat and food for animals and pollinators, sequester carbon, and deflect urban noise. Tree pruning services are an important part of keeping your valuable trees healthy and vibrant.
During a free estimate, our ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Certified Arborist representative will meet with you to discuss which tree pruning goals you wish to accomplish. Our arborists perform all tree pruning services with the utmost care in accordance with ISA pruning standards.
Below are the types of tree pruning services we provide. Click on the pruning type for its description.
Structural Pruning
Genetics, sun exposure, crowding from other plants, wind exposure, storm damage and water availability all affect the natural structure of a tree. Pruning to promote healthy tree structure results in a more robust and balanced form. The desired structure of the tree varies widely with species, but general approaches involve selective removal of secondary stems to promote growth of a central leader stem, removal of crossing or rubbing branches, slight thinning and reduction of end-weight.
Ornamental Pruning
Ornamental pruning is undertaken to improve the aesthetics of smaller trees and shrubs. Some of the desired effects of ornamental pruning may be opening the canopy for a better view of the woody structure of the tree, removing epicormic shoots growing directly from the stem, cleaning out small dead wood or pruning into a specific desired overall shape.
Hazard Reduction Pruning
Well maintained trees are a beautiful and valuable addition to properties. Poorly maintained trees can pose a hazard to people and property. Our arborists prune to reduce hazards by focusing on dead wood removal, removal of broken branches (AKA hangers), proactive removal of flawed or compromised growth and branch end-weight reduction.
Clearance Pruning
In urban environments, trees and shrubs grow amongst and above our houses, work places, sidewalks, turf and streets. Clearance pruning selectively removes growth that may infringe on these structures and areas. Our arborists are well-versed in technical rigging procedures that allow for controlled lowering of removed branches near structures.
Restoration Pruning
Storm damage, poor pruning and neglected tree maintenance can all lead to the need for restoration pruning. Restoration pruning is a long-term pruning plan designed and enacted by our arborists to restore a tree to a healthy form.
Orchard Pruning
The fertile soil of the Willamette Valley makes backyard fruit growing a common pastime for urban gardeners. Maximizing fruit production from fruit trees, while maintaining aesthetics, requires special pruning techniques and timing known as orchard pruning. Generally, the best time of year to orchard prune is around January/February.
Vista Pruning
The hills and valleys of the Portland area provide the perfect varied topography for sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Vista pruning involves selective pruning of tree branches to enhance the view seen from frequent vantage points around the property.
